Barangay 5 became a component barangay of Balangiga on June 27, 1963 by virtue of Republic Act No. 3590. Its former name was Area 5. Barangay 5 is the commercial hub of Balangiga. The public market and major commercial establishments are found in this barangay. The western/ southern part of the barangay is coastal and faces the San Pedro Bay. Fishermen drop their days catch near the public market. Barangay 5 has a total land area of 83 hectares. Practically all of it, is used for residential, institutional and commercial purposes.
