Cansumangkay

Cansumangkay is one of the two barrios outside Poblacion of Balangiga, Eastern Samar which is located along the National Highway.  It is about 3 kilometers away from the heart of the town proper and bounded on the North by reforestation project and Barangay Poblacion I; on the East by the Poray River and Barangay Parina of Giporlos; on the West by the South by the Bugho Creek and Barangay Poblacion VI; and on the South by Barangay Bacjao.  It comprises a total land area of approximately 2,000 hectares.

The history of this Barangay as a political unit is somewhat interesting.  According to one of the settlers Lorenzo Diagro who married to the first teacher assigned to this barrio, Epifania Lavilla that there was a Moro immigrant names Sumiguin who lived in this place for a very short time.  Together with him was his daughter named Layong-uray.  This lady was very beautiful and looks like an enchanted one.  She used to smile always and make friends to her setio folks.  They then characterized this lady as “friendly” known in waray-waray dialect as “MAKISANGKAY”.  Thus to give an importance, the early settlers of this place named it after her physical characteristics with a little modification in the terminology.

In 1951, this place was recognized as one of the registered barrios of the municipality of Balangiga.  The barrio council was regularly organized with Ramon Alvarina as Teniente del barrio. Then followed by Lorenzo Diagro, Clara Diagro, and Gaudencio Sabellano. As teniente del barrio, respectively.  Followed by Primitivo Acidre, called now as capitan del barrio then followed by Sofronio Diagro.  This time he was unable to complete his term because he went to manila, thus he was succeeded by Antonio Calora, one of the members of the council, to assume his unexpired portion as Acting Barangay Captain.  Come the May 17, 1982 Barangay Election, Roman Adorna was elected as their Barangay Captain.  It was on March 1989 Barangay Election that the Barangay Captain Angeles Añano got the highest vote and assume as Barangay Captain of Barangay Cansumangkay, then 1995 fallowed by Mr. Antonio Cabillo, then 1999 Mr. Diogenes C. Diasanta, come the 2001 Barangay election Angeles Añano again as Punong Barangay.  Come October 29, 2007 Barangay Election,  Elemer D. Lanzarote got the highest vote as Punong Barangay up to present.
